what was your most iconic NYC moment?
I’m walking down Greenwich Ave one late night after a seemingly good date. I make a joke, he retorts, we’re laughing together mid-stride when suddenly I feel a warmth come over me. No, reader, it wasn’t the inner feeling of a good connection or vibes, rather, a very outer feeling of a torrent of water straight from above. I look up, confused at what feels like a targeted prank, only to make eyes with an elderly woman who seems just as confused as I am. She pulls her head and the bucket she’s weaponized against me into the window in what I have since interpreted as a scramble in fear. As I’m still in shock, someone makes a comment just punchy enough to land in the moment that he passes: “Your first New York shower! The people are cold, but hey, the water’s warm.”
tell us about a subculture or community you’re part of and how you got involved
When I left my last job, I left behind a coworker who had become a friend. Determined to keep our relationship going, we decided to start a cookbook club inspired by our mutual love of cooking and meeting new people. She and I would each bring a few friends into the fold that the other didn’t know well, and meet monthly to cook a different recipe from the same cookbook. After each, we’d move from a sit-down dinner to an on-your-feet dance party. Running our cookbook club has inspired me to look for more ways to share experiences with friends (and dates) that make it easier to connect deeply with each other. And did I mention a cocktail recipe was always required?
😈 what’s your toxic trait?
Don’t be surprised if one day, after infinity-scrolling on Zillow, I convince you to go in on a purchase of a cabin upstate that we must renovate and retile like our HGTV lives depend on it. A week later, I’ll bug you about a new TikTok fitness trend, the 12/3/30. Next, I’ll send you a thought piece about the food of Macau and prod you that we should get flights there soon. Get me to focus just a bit, and we’ll accomplish great things :).
🥵 what makes you hot?
I find humor in nearly everything, both what many people take very seriously and that of the darker variety. Pair that with my being extremely self-effacing, and we’ll have one too many laughs at my expense (just ask me about the tragicomedy of going to an all-boys Catholic high school).
My first jobs were ski instructor and sushi waiter. I learned the patience of a saint as I daisy-chained 3rd graders together down a mountain and repeatedly explained the difference between maki and nigiri for suburbanites out for date night. More than that, though, I developed a lifelong enjoyment of outdoor sports, definitely food, and best of all, a combination of the two.
🔎 who are you looking for?
A man I can debate deep life mystery musings with, but who also will share in a cheap laugh from what we find in the Twitter corners and TikTok crevices of the internet. The most attractive people to me are the ones who want to leave the world and the people they interact with better after they’ve left them. And if that’s not available, eh, I’ll just take a #6 with fries
