hot singles began as a half-baked scheme to find romantic partners for myself and my friends. i sent out the first email to 70 people on december 18, 2020. now, a year later, the audience has grown to nearly 3000 subscribers. it’s been written up in the new york times, featured on drew barrymore’s talk show, and awarded a fellowship by substack.
but why do all of you keep reading week after week? in a recent survey, i asked readers what they liked most about hot singles. they said:
“It’s a good reminder that single people are people, and everyone is more than their dating profile”
“It makes it feel like there's so many cool people out there and brings a little bit of hope that we're not all single because we're socially inept or something lol which is how Hinge can feel.“
“I really appreciate the diversity of people profiled and the confident/shameless feeling it creates for all of us hot singles :)”
i’m most excited about changing how people feel about dating. but i know people have been wondering about success stories, so for hot singles wrapped, i asked every hot single to give an update on their dates. out of 55 hot singles, 41 responded. perhaps the remaining 14 didn’t want to kiss and tell? here’s the data:
there you have it. i’ll be taking the rest of 2021 off to do some planning for 2022. here’s a little sneak peek of what’s to come:
smaller, activity-centric events
new types of content
collabs and partnerships
and of course, more hot singles :)
to close out the year, i want to give a special shoutout to all of the hot singles who let me interview them in the early days when it felt weird and embarrassing. and a very special shoutout to everyone who has contributed their ideas and work–from designing the logo to DJing the parties to putting up stickers to editing. while i am the only one signing off the emails, countless friends and collaborators* have been contributing behind the scenes. i’m so grateful for everyone’s support!
STAY HOT 🥵
